It was a little after 8 a.m at Wolfram and Hart on what should have been a regular Monday morning. Lilah Morgan walked into her lavish corner office. She set her things down and sat down at her desk. She took a few sips of her coffee and looked over her day planner. She had no meetings until noon. She started checking her email and the office memos. She glanced up from her reading to see the assistant desk just outside her office was empty. She sighed and hit four on the speed dial list. After a few moments she got a person in the steno pool and she told them to send her someone decent and smart for her newest in a long line of assistants.

While she waited for her newest assistant to show up, she received a stunning bouquet of blood red roses. She set them on the coffee table and went back to work.

The thing is - this is not exactly Cameron's idea of a career path that he wants to forge ahead on. But the modeling has yet to take off for him, and the bike messaging thing wasn't exactly paying the bills.

His temp agency had said that he was perfect for an office just like this, and, truth be told, it's not hard, it's just ... monotonous.

Until, that is, the call for something better arrived, and he hurried to the upper floors, straightening his tie before knocking at Lilah's door.

Lilah looked up breifly from her computer when she heard the knock. "Come in."she said as she went back to reading a memo on the computer.

Cameron quickly opens the door and steps inside, but not any further into the room than is completely necessary, not as of yet, anyway.

"Miss Morgan? I'm Cameron Barnes - I've been sent up here because you're in need of an assistant. Where do I begin?"

Lilah looked up from her work.she smiled when she saw who Human resources had sent up. "Well for starters I'm dying for a french vanilla latte,think you can handle that?"

You'd be surprised how many assistants she'd gone through that couldn't follow simple instructions.

Really, he couldn't have anticipated a first meeting going in any other direction. She's gonna test him, obviously, and Cameron vows that he's going to pass each and every one of them with flying colors.

"I think I can handle that. Is it just a simple latte, or do you have any special instructions?"

It never hurts to ask.

"Just make sure there's some foam and that it's from Starbucks the one that's just a block from here." She told him. She really hoped that he 'd last longer than the others.

Her previous assistants had barely a month.

It's easy enough to remember, but still, he reaches into his pocket, retrieves his phone and leaves himself a note. He's not likely to forget, but it looks good, the whole attention to detail thing.

"Pastry? Muffin? Anything at all to eat?"

She considered his question for a moment. "An apple Danish." She was starting to think that this might actually work. She really hoped that he 'd work out.

She went back to looking at her computer. After a second she asked, "you 're still here why?"

"Apple danish," Cameron repeats, tapping her instructions into the notepad of his phone, ensuring that he doesn't forget how she likes her drink, nor which coffeeshop he should be getting it at.

She asks, and his head shoots up, surprised.

"I - uh, I'll be on my way in a moment. Just making sure I got everything down."

Lilah didn't look up from her work as he spoke. She just kept looking through her files. She was pretty sure that Cameron was different from the last ten plus assistants she had in the past two months.

Outside Lilah's office was one of the many paraleages that worked on her floor,they noticed Cameron coming out of Lilah 's office. He looked at Cameron and shook his head.

He wasn't particularly bothered by the way she keeps working - she's a busy woman, after all, and doesn't have time to babysit him. Really, he'd probably be offended if she took time out of her schedule to watch over him. Give him clear, concise instructions, and he'd be fine.

He doesn't say anything as he leaves, but he makes sure to shut the door behind him. And although he catches the little shake of the paralegal's head, he doesn't take it as anything more than him ... underestimating Cameron.

Which is a stupid thing to do, as he's adamant that he succeed at this. He'll prove that he's good for the job. He'd prove that he was worthy.

The guy looked Cameron over for a second then smiled sympathetically. "So you're the newest recruit.... I am so sorry." He actually meant the last part. "Did they not warn you about who you're working for before they sent you up here? " He thought that the people in HR did a better job of warning the newbies who got bosses like Lilah.

"Because they seriously should have..."

Cameron huffs out a chuckle, shrugging slightly. "They did. But maybe they just haven't found a right fit yet. I'm hoping to be the guy that does. Believe me, I'm not afraid of a little hard work."

He's ... starting to get the feeling that's a good quality to have, at least from the way this guy is speaking.

"There's hard work and then there's trying to please that ice queen harpy you call boss. She's like that bitch boss from the devil wears prada. She fits the movie's saying 'a million people would kill for your job' " he said with a small frown.

"Perhaps she just hasn't found an assistant that's capable of dealing with what she expects out of them," Cameron replies, clipped tone of voice indicating just how displeased he is with the way the conversation is heading. "And I don't consider that bitchy more than I do ... discerning. She's allowed to be particular about the way she wants work done. It's not her fault that no one's been able to do it properly."

The guy considered his words then looked at Cameron. "Okay fine maybe you're right, but I don't think you really get how this place operates yet." The guy walked away shaking his head. He knew he was right about the firm.

Whoever he was - that guy was sort of a dick. And, as Cameron grabs his jacket, preparing to head out for coffee and pastries, he finds himself hoping that he doesn't have to work with that guy anytime soon. What the hell, trying to turn him off of the job? He's only just started.

That guy Cameron would soon come to find out was just one of many dicks at the firm. It was no secret that the minions at the firm disliked Lilah, hell most of her own coworkers couldn't deal with her.

Lilah was in a morning staff meeting when Cameron got back.

That's not a surprise, not in a city this big, and not in a firm like this. But he's not going to let someone elses' pessimism get him down. This was a new job, a chance to prove what he could do. It might be a challenge, but he's up for it.

When he returns, he sets the coffee and the bag full of pastries at her desk, and takes a seat at his, taking the time to familiarize himself with his computer, and the files and systems on it.

A short while after he came back to his desk,one of the mail guys came by and set a small sqaure package on his desk. "This is for Ms. Morgan." It had no return adress on it and it was very light and small.

Cameron accepts the pacakage readily, and doesn't ask any questions. It's not really his place to, after all. "Thanks," he mutters, nodding curtly. "I'll make sure she gets it just as soon as she's out of her meeting."

A few moments after the guy left Lilah came back from her meeting. She looked over at Cameron. "Where there any messages or anything? " Her meeting had been boring and uneventful.

Cameron looks up quickly, nodding at the question. "Yes - a package was dropped off for you, which I set on your desk, along with your coffee and pastries. It didn't have a name or return address on it - I'm not sure who it's from."
